i ♥ walmart

after four years of classes based on human rights, small scale economies and the culture of capitalism one would assume that i would be a tree hugging, birkenstock wearing, patchouli smelling new age hippy. alas, my education in global studies has pushed me into the arms of the enemy; consumerism at its best, retail sales.

i have noticed now more than ever that product placement is without a doubt invading every portion of my life. i cannot watch a movie, read an article in a newspaper or listen to a song without being bombarded by undermining sales tactics. im pretty sure every person in the world was confused as to whether or not b spears made a music video or an ad when she released her new pop sensation 'hold it against me'. not only does she look like a super freak tramp i dont think she could have promoted more products if she actually just played adverts for the duration of her song.

but then again there is something about merchandising and marketing that i love. after only a few weeks i have learnt how product display changes the sales figures of a company from one day to the next and simple brand knowledge makes you seem like a fashion guru. people all over the world are consumed by a constant urge, to have more. we are driven to always think that bigger is better, faster is necessary and whoever has the most is winning (charlie sheen style). so as i start my career path (very slowly) i hope that people never change. fashion trends will come and go and as will your wardrobes and hopefully at some point i will have a say as to what goes into them.
